Pilot Project Local District Heating in Aachen

Background

The city of Aachen will soon complete the mandatory municipal heat planning. If a heating network is suitable for a neighborhood but a district heating connection is not feasible in the medium term, a local heating network could be a solution. To support this, the city of Aachen, in cooperation with heatbeat, offers a new advisory service for its residents.

If a neighborhood is suitable for a heating network but a medium-term connection to the existing district heating system is not possible, a local heating network may be a viable solution for supplying heat to the buildings. Local heating networks can provide a future-proof, renewable, and oil- and gas-independent heat supply, even in challenging spatial conditions. They can utilize local waste heat from nearby businesses and environmental heat sources such as geothermal energy or ambient air within the neighborhood.

Pilot Project Local District Heating

To assess the suitability of such neighborhoods for local heating networks, the city of Aachen, in cooperation with the local company heatbeat, offers a new advisory service for its residents. The goal of this free consultation is to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of a local heating network, helping property owners make informed decisions. Various network-based supply options are analyzed and compared. The most promising network-based solution is then assessed against decentralized individual heating systems in terms of cost. However, a detailed approval and implementation plan for the proposed local heating network is not included in the free consultation. Additionally, the service provides guidance on fundamental organizational aspects, such as potential operating models.
